A valid email address is required, and a verification email will be sent to you. The subject will be “Mastodon: Confirmation instructions for norcal.social”. You must click the confirmation link to activate your account so please check for the email right away.
By default we try to keep registrations open, meaning anyone can sign up without admin approval. Sometimes we get flooded with spam/bot sign ups and have to temporarily enable manual approval for new accounts. If you see a “Why do you want to join” box please enter information that confirms you live in or have a connection to Norther California. We typically approve new accounts within 24 hours.
Once you’re account is active start by filling out your profile. Be sure to:
- Add an Avatar (profile picture)
- Add a Header (banner image)
- Fill out your Bio – add hashtags that are relevant to you
A common practice on Mastodon is to create a post about yourself with the hashtag #introduction. After making the post select the ellipses for the more option and click “Pin on profile”. This will keep the post at the top of your profile and make it easy for people to find out more about you. By no means is this required, but it’s a great way to get started connecting with people.
